Q: What is LED Lighting?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. The diode comes in the form of a computer chip on a circuit board. The properties of the diode cause it to generate light when an electric current passes through it. Depending on the chip and materials used, different colors in the color spectrum can be created. Prior to the technological revolution of the 90s and the rapid advancement of the microchip, the LED was used only in small-scale applications such as indicator lights.

The same advancements that spurred the computer to reach dizzying levels of efficiency have also done the same for the LED. Just as computers have become faster and cheaper, LED lights have become brighter, smaller, less expensive, and more sophisticated.

LEDs are solid state technology. That means there is no glass bulb, no pressurized gases, no mercury and no burning filament. With the traditional bulb, 90% of its energy is transmitted as heat while light is a mere by-product of electrifying the metal coil inside the bulb.

From the indicator light on your VCR to the light fixture above your head, LEDs have come a long way in becoming the go-to solution for building and home illumination.

Q: What’s the difference between UL listing and ETL listing?

UL and ETL are both what is called Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL). NRTLs are in place to provide independent safety and quality certifications on products. Electrical appliances typically require their certification (especially 240V appliances). UL develops the testing standards and tests to them. ETL tests to UL standards. In order for an inspector to sign off on permitted installation for an EVSE, the National Electric Code requires the EVSE be NRTL listed (in the US that is ETL or UL).

LED Waves, Inc. does use both laboratories; the selection of which laboratory depends on which company provides the best value for their service that we can then in turn pass on to our customers.

Q: Are E26 and E27 light bulb bases interchangeable?

Yes. The E26 is the standard 120 Volt American base. The E27 is the European variant and is rated at 220 Volts. E26 is 26 mm and the E27 is 27 mm diameter. However, an E26 bulb can fit in E27 base and an E27 bulb can fit in E26 base without problem. The sockets / bulbs are interchangeable except for the voltage rating. Therefore, LED E26 bulbs that are universal line-voltage can be used in both E26 and E27 sockets.

Q: Why are LED lights so expensive?

Even considering the energy savings and replacement costs, LED lights come with a fair amount of sticker shock. Part of this is because they’re so new; more research and development is being poured into this field than any other lighting technology. As our understanding of this technology increases prices will continue to fall. For example, early LEDs were mounted on a sapphire substrate. Today’s LED chip designers are experimenting with various silicon substances to replace expensive sapphire while not compromising performance.

Still, it is unlikely that LED lights will ever break the price point of standard incandescent lights since more work goes into the components. Light-emitting diodes are not based simply on fire or a heated filament in a glass like older technology; each lamp is the product of soldering together a number of parts – a heat sink, driver, circuit board and LED chips engineered for specific lighting applications. Think of an LED light fixture as an appliance rather than a disposable object.

LED Waves happens to build products exclusively with high-quality, name brand LEDs. These chips reflect more years of research in the field, and the fact that companies like Cree and Nichia have lasted so long amid other fly-by-night LED operations speaks to the dependability of these finished products. If an LED bulb promises 5 years of useful life, shouldn’t its chip manufacturer have been in business at least that long?

Q: What are IP ratings (i.e IP65, IP67, etc.?)

A two-digit number established by the International Electro Technical Commission, is used to provide an Ingress Protection rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment. The first digit indicates protection against ingress of solid objects. The second digit indicates protection against ingress of liquids. For more details on the protection level of each digit, please refer to this page.

Q: What are the advantages of using LEDs over traditional lighting?

The LED lights of today match or surpass the performance of all incumbent lighting technologies. LEDs operate on significantly less energy than incandescent lights, which are wildly inefficient. They also last longer (average 10 years of normal use) and are more durable because they are solid state, shock-proof, and can be housed safely in plastic instead of glass. LED wall washers and spotlights are DMX controllable to create color and light intensity effects which cannot be achieved with other technologies.

At roughly half the efficiency, a CFL almost stacks up against an LED bulb yet still comes up short in terms of reliability. Fluorescent lights rely on chemical reactions with gases (including the neurotoxin mercury) contained within a fragile bulb. These reactions are adversely affected by upside-down installations. Furthermore, the ballast of a CFL is not designed to handle rapid on-off cycles – all of which explain why so many people are disappointed by these bulbs.

The bottom line is that LEDs are easier and safer to use than all previous lighting technologies. And LEDs will save you money by consuming less power, requiring fewer replacements, and generating much less heat, which in turn combine to result in lower cooling costs.

Q: How do I compare my current lighting with LED lighting so I can make intelligent decisions?

In the past, we have generally referred to the brightness of a bulb in terms of its wattage, or the amount of power that the bulb uses (or energy it consumes). Because of the disparity between incandescent and LED technologies, we have to change our language a bit in order to account for progress. When referring to brightness, we now find ourselves comparing lumens (see Q: What is a lumen?).

However, when comparing LEDs with incandescents, it gets a little trickier because the typical incandescent projects light in 360 degrees – at the ceiling, within the fixture, everywhere – not just where you need it. Because LED lights are directional, they focus all the light they generate exactly where you want it, and nowhere that you don’t.

Another consideration is color temperature. In the past, this has been very difficult to control because you basically got whatever color your particular bulb produced. Typically this was a Warm White (about 3000K) if you had an incandescent bulb, and a Cool White (around 5000K) if you had a fluorescent bulb. Because the LED is an intelligent, solid-state technology, we are able to produce LEDs that not only produce Warm White and Cool White, but are able to produce up to 16 million different colors, each a different temperature.

Q: With all the buzz around compact fluorescent bulbs, should I skip this step towards efficient lighting altogether and move directly to a LED bulb?

Compact fluorescents are great bulbs but they lack all the advantages of LEDs; namely size and environmentally friendliness because they contain mercury, do not last as long, and they degrade with rapid on-off cycles and temperature fluctuations.

Q: What are lumens?

A lumen is a unit that measures luminous flux, or the total amount of visible light emitted by a source. If a light source emits one candela (approximately one candle’s worth) of luminous intensity into one steradian (a solid angle – picture light waves emitting from a source in a cone shape), the total luminous flux emitted into that steradian is one lumen. The lumen can be thought of casually as a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted. For example, a standard 100 Watt incandescent bulb emits about 1500 lumens.

Q: What is Lux?

Lux is lumen per square meter. The difference between the lux and the lumen is that the lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread. 1000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square meter, lights up that square meter with an illuminance of 1000 lux. The same 1000 lumens, spread out over ten square meters, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux.

You may not know it, but LED lights frequent the news nowadays. LED light are being installed into street lights near you, there are studies about whether or not LED light exposure is bad or good for your health, and there is even news about crops that benefit from LED lights and supermarket items that don’t benefit from LED lights. Either way it seems like everyday another interesting study emerges. Below are a few recent topics in LED News:

Exposure to Blue Light can Enhance Brain Health: Being exposed to short periods of blue light can help boost  brain stimulation, specifically with working memory performance. This in turn leads to enhanced reaction times. According to Anna Alkozei, one of the lead authors of this study, “exposure to blue light (like LED light) is almost similar to basking under sunlight, which leads to improved alertness and enhanced performance on response time tasks.” All in all, if you exposure yourself to at least 30 minutes of blue LED light each day, your cognitive task performance may enhance.

Dynamic LED Grow Light: A new devices has been introduced to farmers which would allow them to test out different lighting applications on their crops. They can test out many LED colors on the color spectrum including far red, red, white and blue. This devices gives farmers greater control over cultivation.

LED Exposure to Milk: According to a recent study, LED exposure degrades the quality of milk. Who knew?! Currently when you shop for milk in the supermarkets, they are showcased under LED lighting. This soon could change. A study by Cornell University’s Department of Food Science, determined that LED exposure for as little as a few hours degrades the quality of milk. The next time you visit a supermarket the milk display may or may not change, it all depends on the retailers and if they prefer milk longevity to product display.

Light Technology Reduces Cancer Patients Side Effects from Radiation and Chemotherapy: According to NASA, a newly developed light technology can successfully reduce painful side effects that bone marrow and stem cell transplant cancer patients experience during radiation and chemotherapy. It is a cost-efficient therapy alternative and it also offers several other health benefits to patients.

Completing a lighting audit is a helpful tool for keeping lighting projects on time and on budget. Are they a must-have?

Well, not on every project, but in some situations, the risks of foregoing an audit may greatly increase the likelihood of completing that project late or over budget.

What are the benefits of a lighting audit? In general, a quality audit will give you a better handle on the expected project cost and return on investment. Additionally, it will give you a clearer picture of installation conditions, minimizing surprises when it’s time to install.
But if you immediately see dollar signs when you read the phrase “lighting audit,” it’s worth remembering that there are a number of ways to capture the necessary information based on the type of project. We’ve found that pairing the right audit approach can have a significant positive effect on our clients’ success in completing their projects and meeting the goals imposed on them.

So, how do you know where to begin and what type of lighting audit you need?
For starters, let’s look at the two very basic categories of projects we encounter:

1. Simple lighting projects
A project qualifies as simple if the facility meets the following criteria:

Building is less than 10,000 square feet
Three or less lighting fixture types involved
Only screw-in retrofits (no retrofit kits or fixture replacements)
No advanced controls or dimming systems required
This type of project can still have a lot of moving parts and often spans a large number of locations, but the scope of the installation is relatively simple.

The most common example of a simple project is a retail store.

2. Complex lighting projects
A project qualifies as complex if the facility meets any of these criteria:

More than 10,000 square feet in size
More than three lighting fixture types
Involves retrofit kits and fixture replacements
Contains advanced controls or dimming systems
Complex projects usually take place in restaurants with a dimming system, shopping malls, university campuses, and commercial office buildings, among many other places.

A guide to Regency’s lighting surveys and audit types
Once you’ve determined if your lighting project classifies as either simple or complex, you need to decide what type of lighting audit is best for your application.

There are four types of lighting surveys or audits we typically consider:

Self Survey
Regency Survey
Lighting Audit
Electrical Audit
*Please note that the types of audits offered by other companies may vary. The below is specific to Regency.

So how do you decide which type of audit/ survey is best for your project? We’ve created the following guide to help explain the difference between lighting surveys and lighting audits and help you decide which is right for your project.

Understanding the options will help you make great decisions and set you up for success. Whether you’re completing a simple project or a complex project, a lighting audit is an important tool for dialing in the right scope of work and minimizing budgetary and installation risks.

If you’re ready to begin a lighting retrofit project but are still unsure of where to start, please contact us ,we are pleasure guide you in the right direction.

The Cost of Street Lights

Are you wondering; How much does a street light cost? Or even, how much does it cost to install a street light? The following article will explain it all and answer both of those questions and show you the true advantages of LED street lights.

The cost of any LED lighting system has the following components:

1) Material cost of bulb, poles and electrical wires and labor cost of installing the light – the cost of installing one street light pole is generally around $4000. It depends on the height of the pole, the rated power and efficiency of the light, type of foundation needed and length of wiring from the nearest source of electricity. When the nearest source of electricity is too far away as in rural communities it may be wise to install solar powered street lights instead of laying down miles of wire to energize the light. However, solar power solutions are considerably more expensive than a grid lit street light.

2) Cost of energy consumed by the bulb – Our 105W Retrofit Kit for LED Street lights consumes 105 watts and produces 15,776 lumens of high quality light. By comparison the 209,000 street lights of Los Angeles use 197,000,000 kWh of electricity every year at the rate of 250 watts per hour. Cost savings in electricity costs by adapting the LED alternative is what is propelling Los Angeles and many other cities towards LED lighting systems.

Added to this is the fact that Low Pressure Sodium (LPS) lights that produce the most light per watt have a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of ‘zero’. For good visibility they need to be combined with incandescent bulbs. The 5% efficiency rating of incandescent bulbs pulls down the efficiency of LPS lights as well. LPS lights are thus not suited for general purpose street lighting. Slightly better than that are High Pressure Sodium Bulbs, but those lights are typically 2700K and have a CRI between 20-40. Their light quality is terrible, and they must produce a lot of lumens to make up for the poor quality of light. Metal Halide, a brighter white light, tends to be a higher quality light source, with some bulbs approaching the CRI of LED, however, the majority of those bulbs are around 60 CRI. LED CRI typically starts at or above 70 on the scale of 0 to 100.

The function of providing security is compromised with lights with low CRI. Police forces dislike low CRI lights because they make it impossible to tell colors apart. Yellow is the only color that is reflected. If an object does not reflect yellow light it appears black. Disruptions in the road are also difficult to visualize because the road and the dents all appear yellow! Poor contrast and color rendering necessitate that more powerful lights are needed to achieve the objectives of street lighting. Powerful lights in turn lead to glare which again compromises the ability of the human eye to see objects clearly. Indeed in areas where security is important mercury and metal halide lamps are preferred despite their inefficiencies and are rapidly being replaced by LED lights that cost a fraction to operate and maintain.

A comparison of good CRI lights shows that lights offered by MyLEDLightingGuide outperform the others by a wide margin on all parameters, thus making any street light cost more plausible to put forward for more consideration to make the switch to LED street lighting.

Average Life Span (years) 20+ * 5 4 3
*rated L70 of 100,000 hrs, 3650 hours per year average use

3) Cost of replacing burnt out bulbs and disposal of bulbs – We may not realize it but the cost of monitoring and replacing bulbs can be very high for street lights. Los Angeles spends 42 million dollars for monitoring and maintaining 209,000 street lights. This works out to more than $200 per street light per year. The reason for the high cost is that street lights are placed at a height that necessitates the use of a cherry picker to carry workers to the light and a U haul truck to carry the cherry picker. Christian B. Luginbuhl of the U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station carried out a detailed comparison of different outdoor light options and concluded that Low Pressure Sodium lamps last 6000 hours less than HPS lamps leading to higher maintenance costs. Besides ‘zero’ color rendering ability, this is an important reason why LPS lights have not become widely accepted.

Cost of replacing one bulb = Cost of replacement bulb + Salary of 2 people + rental of cherry picker + rental of truck = $800 (Assuming cost of one bulb and ballast to be around $150).

*All cost calculations are based on the data of US cities and reports by residents who have to pay directly for the replacement of street light bulbs.

Cities have found that funds available for maintenance have been frozen while expectations of service quality remain unchanged. Technology offers the only way out of the dilemma. Remote monitoring systems pare the cost of physical verification of lights while LED technology has extended the life of each light to 12 to 15 years from the current 5 years. The city of Ann Arbor had estimated that the savings in maintenance costs are higher than the savings in energy.

4) Environmental impact of lights – The first 3 are easy to estimate while the fourth is not. Carbon dioxide emissions, mercury and heavy metal release in the environment, cost of treating water, land and light pollution, impact on ecosystems and human health- the ramifications of the lighting decision are manifold and covering all of them here is not possible. Suffice it to say that on all of these parameters LED lighting systems outperform all others.

Lighting represents more than 60% of the average warehouse’s electricity end use. Much of that electricity goes to high-bay lighting, which is defined as indoor lighting in spaces with ceilings that are 25 feet tall or higher. Unfortunately, much of the electricity used to light those fixtures is wasted, primarily due to outdated technology.
Wasted electricity in warehouses comes in many forms, but the reliance on older lighting technologies, such as high-intensity discharge (HID) and linear fluorescents, is the most notable example. That is why many warehouse owners and managers are turning to light emitting diodes (LEDs) for their high-bay fixtures.

LED lighting makes inroads in warehouse lighting
In the first decade of the 21st century, LED adoption was relatively low in warehouses. Older versions of LEDs didn’t provide the same level of illumination as HIDs, which made them impractical. However, that has changed in recent years as LED technology caught up to the lighting needs of modern businesses, including warehouses.
In fact, the installed base of LED high-bay lighting more than quintupled between 2010 and 2012. As such, innovative warehouse owners and managers have an enormous opportunity to outpace their competitors by getting in on the ground floor of the LED market.

Practical benefits of LED high-bay fixtures for warehouse lighting
Recent LED lighting developments have made their application ideal in refrigerated warehouses and other storage and shipping facilities for many reasons. Not only do LEDs use less energy, they offer many other benefits that make them perfect for warehouse owners and managers who are intent on using innovation to maximize profits, create a safer work environment and streamline their overall operations. The following are four benefits that demonstrate the value LED high-bay fixtures can bring to warehouses.

1. Reduced heat output: LEDs have a much lower heat output than other light bulbs. This can be particularly helpful for refrigerated warehouses, where the heat given off by older bulbs makes it difficult to maintain optimum refrigeration temperatures and leads to higher energy costs.
2. Light quality and safety: With LEDs, warehouse lighting can make for a safer and more productive work environment. Employees can see more clearly, making movement throughout the facility much easier. For example, workers in a food processing facility can more accurately select the products they are seeking. Additionally, with correct lamp placement and well-designed LED units, forklift operators can move through loading areas better with improved visibility to see other employees and potential obstacles.
3. Reduced maintenance: Due to their height and the large number of bulbs required, high-bay fixtures are some of the most difficult to maintain. Getting to bulbs that need to be replaced requires special equipment. Older bulbs with shorter lifespans than LEDs need to be replaced frequently. LEDs last 2 to 5 times longer than HIDs,4 which means less time and resources being devoted to basic maintenance.
4. Dimming and lighting controls: LEDs also lend themselves easily to dimming and other lighting controls. They turn on and off immediately, whereas HIDs take much longer to reach full brightness. They can be connected to occupancy and other lighting sensors so that intermittently used spaces are not lit when they aren’t being used. LEDs work well with dimming controls, allowing you to add control to lighting environments and tailor lighting levels.

Financial benefits of LED high-bay fixtures
Since a commercial lighting retrofit for warehouse lighting can be more extensive than it is for other facilities, costs will always be a concern. However, when long-term savings are factored in, the financial benefits become readily apparent. Additionally, available programs such as PG&E’s On-Bill Financing (OBF) offer businesses benefits (based on eligibility) which include interest-free loans and funding on numerous technologies, such as lighting, HVAC, refrigeration and LED.

A recent study conducted by PG&E at a Rocklin, California-based distribution center found that LED fixtures, coupled with aggressive lighting controls, led to significant energy savings. In that study, which was done in a nearly 45,000-square-foot warehouse, the return on investment (ROI) was calculated at 3.6 years. Just as important, there was a 93% expected decrease in annual energy consumption as a result of the retrofit.

Gain the most out of a warehouse lighting retrofit
Pursuing a warehouse lighting retrofit is now easier and more affordable than ever. Thanks to rebates, incentives and financing from PG&E, the upfront costs have been greatly reduced. And with the latest LED technology making its application in high-bay fixtures an obvious upgrade over the competition, the long-term advantages are many.

LED package has experienced several technical upgrades, from the first generation of PPA to ceramic substrate, and now comes to the third generation of EMC package. The emerging of new technologies brings unlimited business opportunities to contenders, while also hits the market structure in their field.

EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) is one of the main raw materials during producing IC (Integrated Circuit). With the development of IC packaging technology, EMC as the main electronic packaging materials has also been developed rapidly. Because of high reliability, low cost, simple production process, suitable for mass production, EMC occupies more than 97 % of the market share in the entire microelectronics packaging materials market. Now, EMC is extending to semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, consumer electronics, automotive, military, aviation and so on. Because of excellent heat resistance and suitable for large-scale production, EMC provides an excellent solution for LED packaging applications.

EMC package is a highly integrated framework that adopts modified epoxy materials and etching technique, the etched copper substrate makes epoxy with greater contact area with copper holder. Respect to thermoplastic PPA, EMC has stronger adhesive force, makes the EMC products have unique advantages on against moisture and Red ink penetration, this package originates from the IC package, but different from it. Due to the changes in materials and structures, EMC products with features of high heat resistance, anti-UV, highly integrated, withstand high current, small size and so on. Especially improved UV resistance significantly, making the EMC product applications expanded greatly, it can be applied to harsh environments as outdoor lamp and automotive lighting, will have great impact to the high-end ceramic packages.

In order to pursuit cost-effective, the use of ultra-current in the LED industry has become a consensus, but there are also high risks on the heat treatment. EMC is outstanding because of its high heat resistance. Currently, the generic packaging technology that EMC used is: adopts normal DA / vertical structure low or middle power chip, low thermal insulation gum as chip adhesive, and then soldering, powder and cutting, finally achieve the finished product.

EMC package will not only change packaging manufacturers, but also influence related companies, such as bracket and equipment factories, especially will bring great impact to the traditional PPA and ceramic bracket market.

Lack of natural light during nighttime in the urban environment was always a problem. From basic inconvenience that people cannot see where they are going to the greater chance of being attacked or mugged during the night. Because the problem was there since humans started living together, history of street light is maybe longer than we think.

It is known that natural gas was led through bamboo pipes from volcano gas leaks to the streets of Peking to serve as a fuel for street lamps and that as early as 500 years BC. Ancient Romans used oil lamps filled with vegetable oil in front of their houses and had special slaves whose only duty was to take care of those lamps, to light them, extinguish them and watch that they always have oil. First organized method of public lightning was done on 1417, when Mayor of London, Sir Henry Barton first ordained that by law all houses must hang lanterns outside when night falls during the winter months. Paris street were illuminated first time by order in 1524 that said that all houses must have light in the windows at night if they face the streets. One more method to brighten the streets at nights were “link-boys”, children servants that wealthy citizens of London paid to carry torches while accompanying them through the city (practice that was sometimes dangerous because they sometimes led their costumers into dark alleys to be mugged by footpads).

Era of more efficient street lightning starts with William Murdock who, for the first time in 1802, lit the outside of the Soho Foundry in a public presentation with a gas light fueled with coal gas. After that, in 1807, London got its first gas lit street. Baltimore was the first city in the United States that started using gas for streetlight in 1816 while Paris started gas illumination of its streets in 1820. Gas was led through pipe installations to the gas lanterns that were placed on poles. Every evening the lamplighters, men whose job was to take care of the gas streetlights, were lighting the lanterns and every morning they were putting them off. This was done until the invention of the mechanism that lit the lamps when the gas was released in the lamp. After that came electricity and made street lightening even more efficient.

First electric streetlight used arc lamps, namely “Yablochkov candle”. It was first used in 1878 in Paris. By 1881, some 4000 were in use, replacing gas lanterns on the poles. After the spreading of the arc lamps in the United States, by 1890 there were more than 130,000 arc lamps installed as streetlights. Most of them were installed on the tops of so-called “moonlight towers” – tall, metal constructions that illuminated more city blocks at once. Arc lights had two major flaws: they made strong, harsh light and they did not last long. So in time they were replaced with incandescent lamps that were cheaper, brighter and lasted longer, while arc lamps remained useful on industrial sites. Today, streetlights use high-intensity discharge lamps, mostly HPS high-pressure sodium lamps.
